Transmission maintenance can involve a routine flushing out of the old fluid and adding new fluid, but a complete transmission service is more involved. Like oil changes, flushing out a transmission is a basic, but important, task that doesn’t take that long. But to keep your vehicle in top working condition, you might also need a complete transmission service from time to time.
How Often Do I Need Transmission Service?
This depends on the type of transmission that your car or truck has. In general, routine flushing should take place:
- For automatic transmissions: In most cases, transmission services should be scheduled every 60,000 to 100,000 miles.
- For manual transmissions: These need to be serviced more often, about every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.
In some cases, we will flush out transmissions before the manufacturers’ recommended timeframes when customers notice problems like difficulty shifting gears and grinding sounds. After inspecting the parts, we might recommend a full transmission service.
What Does a Full Transmission Service Include?
With a full transmission service, we will flush out all of the fluid and remove any contaminants that have built up. Our techs also do pan drop service, which lets them see if there is debris or internal parts that need replacement. The transmission filter may also need to be replaced.
